April is National Poetry Month!

Whether you prefer free verse or haiku, concrete or limerick, April is the month to explore poetry. Write it, read it, share it.
Here are a couple of poems to get you started:
This is Just to Say
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast.
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold.
Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don’t make sense

Can’t get enough? How about some poetry websites?
Poetry Daily - Sign in every day to read a new poem. Share them with your friends, send them to relatives, or just enjoy them for yourself.
The Genuine Haiku Generator - Search for the haiku
Find one that is good for you
Enjoy poetry
Poetry Creator - Choose your subject and a few key pieces and it will create a poem just for you . . . or hit random and see what others have created!
Magnetic Poetry - Choose a magnetic poetry kit based on the works of famous poets and create your own fridge verse!
Concrete Poetry Generator - Concrete poetry is poetry in which the way the words are arranged is as important in conveying the idea of the poem. It is sometimes known as visual poetry because the words create a picture. (To see examples of concrete poetry, see The Sackner Archive of Visual and Concrete Poetry)
It’s Warm In the Teen Lounge!
Did you know the new Teen Lounge is open at Hinsdale Public Library?
We have four teen specific computers, cool chairs, a space for studying, and all of the YA materials you love! It is a major improvement and Spring Break is the perfect time to come in and check it out!!!
Spring Break kicked off with snow but the new Teen Lounge is HOT!
Happy Teen Tech Week!
Across America teens are celebrating Teen Tech Week by “Tuning In” to what their libraries have to offer. Come in and check out our extensive CD collection or check out an audiobook (do you know that you can legally check out an audiobook and upload it to your MP3 player as long as you delete it after you are finished listening to it?).
All of these resources can be found in our newly opened Teen Lounge! In addition to the great materials we have available to you, we also have four teen exclusive computers where you can check e-mail, chat, and continue the Teen Tech Week Celebration online.
If you don’t see the materials you are looking for at the library, please ask a librarian to request it for you!
Knitting Rocks!
Did you know we have a knitting celebrity in Hinsdale? Theresa Schabes, Hinsdale resident and teacher at Knitche in Downers Grove, has designed (among other things) the cover sweater for one of the leading knitting magazines in the world, Interweave Knits!
What does this mean for you? You have the opportunity to benefit from her expertise!!
Mrs. Schabes will be teaching a Teen Knitting Workshop on
Saturday March 8 from 1 - 3 p.m.
Teens in grades 6 - 12 are welcome to sign up for the workshop. Everyone who participates will receive a pair of bamboo needles and a ball of yarn. There is a limit of 18 knitters, so sign up now! Seriously. . . what are you waiting for? An opportunity like this doesn’t come along every day!

HPL Film Fest!
HPL is having a Film Festival! All high school aged teens are encouraged to create a film and submit it for the first annual Hinsdale Public Library Film Fest. You may work alone, or collaborate with friends or a group. The film must be an original work and be 20 minutes or less . . . the rest is up to you and your vision.
When you submit your DVD, please label it with the film’s title, running time, and the director’s name and contact information. Also, please include an entry form. All DVDs must be received by February 29, 2008.
A panel of judges will screen all films and those filmmakers selected for the festival will be contacted by the end of March. We cannot wait to see all of your submissions. If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact us at the library.
Happy Filming!
Super Tuesday

There is so much happening in our country that it is important for EVERYONE to vote. Do you feel like you aren’t well enough informed? Check out Project Vote Smart and Rock the Vote for information about the election process, the candidates, and information about what you can do to make a difference during this election year.
Did you know you do not have to be 18 to register to vote? The state requires that you be 18 by the next election in order to vote. So, if your birthday is later in the year but before November 4th, register now (you cannot register in the 27 days prior to an election)! If you register now you’ll be ready to cast your ballot come Election Day!
How do you register? Print and fill out a form or come into the Hinsdale Public Library and register with a staff member!
Rock the Vote, Vote Smart . . . however you vote, just do it!
Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote.

And We’re Back!
Hi! My name is Becca and I am the new Young Adult Librarian at Hinsdale Public Library. I could not be any more excited! I graduated from Dominican University with my Masters of Library and Information Science in May and have been working as the Teen Librarian at the River Forest Public Library since graduation. I live in Chicago with my husband and bunny. When I’m not at the library, I’m probably knitting or reading. Please stop in and say hello. I look forward to getting to know all of you!
Check back in a few months!
Hey Guys and Gals,
THe Teen Blog is going on a brief vacation for the holidays. Happy Holidays to everyone who has been reading the blog or visiting the library. Check back in a month and the blog will have some more interesting entries for you.
Artists for Peace, Look Here!
WhataboutPeace? is a national contest for high school students to express themselves through different works of art- all concerned with or centered around the idea of peace in our world. The contest is unique in that students can submit their own works of art in almost any format. WhataboutPeace? accepts sculptures, rap songs, essays, photographs, home-made videos, comic strips … almost anything you can create to express your vision of peace may be submitted. Interested to see how other high school kids expressed their ideas about peace? Just check out the contest winners from 2006 and 2007.
The contest is limited to high school students only. The entry forms for the 2008 contest have recently been made available to download here.
Great prizes are awarded to the winners and your voice gets heard on a very important topic. If you submit an entry, please e-mail Tom Spicer (Young Adult Librarian at the Hinsdale Public Library.)
Good luck!
