Up Close and Personal by David Marcet

June – August, 2014

Hinsdale resident David Marcet is a figurative artist who hails from Chicago, Illinois. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Drake University in 1997 and his MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005. David is a professor of art at Benedictine University. The exhibit, located in the Quiet Reading Room through February, is free and open to the public.

“The work in this show is a family portrait. I have included multiple self-portraits that chronicle my own experience, portraits of my three children, my wife, and portraits of my parents. The title of the show, Up Close and Personal, refers to both the scale and context of the paintings. All the portraits are extreme close-ups and deal with personal space. The proximity of viewer to the subjects implies a closeness that typically only exists in a home between family members, at least by conventional standards. I can think of multiple occasions in which I was awoken early in morning to one of my children’s faces an inch or so from my own.”
