Time Capsule for the trees Programs
Time Capsule for the trees, presented by the Library’s Art Committee, is a walk-in curiosity cabinet that will be unveiled on Arbor Day, April 26. The eight-foot-tall structure will display tree-inspired objects created by the artist and contributed by residents. We’re looking for items made possible by trees, inspired by the many benefits of trees, or that conjure memories associated with trees. Items will be collected at the events listed below and in the Library lobby through April 7.

Morton Arboretum presents Help Your Trees Help You
Tuesday, March 5, 7:00 p.m.–8:15 p.m.
Trees work hard for you every day, providing a wide range of benefits – from cleaner air and water, to reduced flooding and more. Learn why you should help your trees help you from Lydia Scott, Director of the Chicago Region Trees Initiative, The Morton Arboretum. Then hear about the Time Capsule for the trees sculpture – and how you can help create it.
Casting Workshop for Kids
Wednesday, March 13, 4:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.
Grades 4-8
Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford leads an art workshop to make molded-plaster objects for the upcoming installation. Learn about mold making, make tree-related drawings, and create plaster copies of items to be displayed as part of the exhibition. Limit 20.
Meet the Artist Open House & Art Making
Sunday, April 7, 2:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
Meet the artist and curator of Time Capsule for the trees, as you bring tree-inspired objects to display as part of the artwork. Work side-by- side with the artist to place your object in the sculptural display. If you’d like, share why you chose your object and tell your tree stories. Guidelines for contributing objects are available here.
Flowering Spring Trees: A Painting Workshop

Learn to paint beautiful flowering trees with some fun, easy painting techniques using watercolor pencils, plastic wrap and brushes.
Art Installation Unveiling

When better to unveil tree- inspired artwork than Arbor Day? Come see the sculpture that Hinsdale neighbors helped create to celebrate trees. Leave with your own free tree seedling, courtesy of Bartlett Tree Experts. Seedlings available while supplies last. No registration required.
Practical Tips for Tree TLC
Wednesday, May 8, 7:00 p.m.–8:15 p.m.
Tom Tyler, MS, ISA-Certified Arborist, Bartlett Tree Experts, will cover practical tree care. From managing soil and pests, to pruning, to helping your trees through a construction project, he’ll unlock the secrets to healthy and thriving trees and share his top 10 best trees for our urban environment.
Tolkien and Trees
Wednesday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m.
Liam Heneghan, environmental science professor at DePaul University and author of Beasts at Bedtime: Revealing Environmental Wisdom in Children’s Literature, will discuss the relationship between J.R.R. Tolkien and trees, including how Tolkien’s environmental concerns impacted The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
