Comic Con Celebration Coming to the Library

Friday 5, 2023 at 8:57 PM

Talking about your favorite movie, TV show, or book is pretty relatable, but have you ever felt like you couldn’t talk about it enough? Even if you don’t know this feeling, you might know someone who always jumps at the opportunity to discuss the newest Colleen Hoover book or Marvel blockbuster film. Having passion over a work of fiction, or even a celebrity, might place you in a “fandom.” That’s really all it takes!

Although becoming a fan happens on your own, you’ll find that the heart of fandom thrives at conventions. If you were in Chicago on April 1, you may have been fooled by the colorful crowds of Chicago’s Comic and Entertainment Expo, the city’s largest fandom convention. These conventions are annual gatherings of fans who come together to celebrate community, with more than 40 fandom-related conventions happening annually in Illinois alone.

Now, you can add one more to that list: the Hinsdale Public Library is excited to present our very first fandom convention this May!

As a frequent convention attendee, I am always asked: what do you do at these things? Is it all about comics? What if I don’t like comics, or what if I don’t have anything fancy to wear? There’s no need to panic. Fandom is for everyone, from the most hardcore fans to total newbies, and it encompasses absolutely anything and everything. Comics are not the only thing you’ll find at a convention, but you’ll never find out what’s in store unless you come and see it for yourself.

HPL Con welcomes fans of all ages. There will be plenty for the kids, as we are excited to offer face-painting, a costume parade, craft stations, and a special storytime for our littlest fans. The Chicago Cosplay Photographers will be stationed inside with props available to take free professional-level photos of you showing off your costume!

Feeling camera shy? No problem. Justin Castaneda, experienced comic artist and children’s book creator, will be presenting a complimentary class for all ages that will help make your drawings pop! If you prefer something a little more laid-back, we will be playing episodes of various Japanese anime shows in our Teen Lounge. Maybe you will get hooked on a new binge-worthy show!

Put your pop culture knowledge to the test with our trivia event. Just bring your phone and competitive spirit to participate. Even if you don’t end up in first place, there’s still a chance to win something cool by entering our prize raffle.

We’re incredibly excited to offer a selection of arts and crafts created by a dozen small businesses across Chicagoland. With something for everyone, our artists will have their tables on display for your browsing pleasure. Now is your chance to grab a unique present for someone special (like a last-minute Mother’s Day gift if you’re in a pinch)!

The Library is a place to learn and discover new things, so check out our graphic novels, comics, and manga while you’re at the convention. Our staff are happy to help you find what you need.

HPL Con will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 13. Find a full schedule of the day’s festivities here. No registration is required, so drop in, satiate your curiosity, and come dressed as modestly or as cartoonishly as you like!
